The community's uplands area (known to residents as Mackenzie Heights) was first to see residential settlement. These uplands, which filled with gracious middle-class homes between 1912 and the 1930s, became identified with the adjacent communities of Dunbar and Kerrisdale. The B.C. Electric's interurban railway line, which connected Steveston with Vancouver in 1905, passed through the Kerrisdale area (with stops at 37th/ East Boulevard and 41st/East Boulevard) acted as a trigger for early development.

The railway was replaced with trolley buses in July 1952. During the 1940s and 1950s sand was brought in from False Creek and the low areas filled in with houses, schools and shops. in the late 1960s a major development occurred within the community when Arbutus Village, a housing and shopping complex was constructed.

This area is actually made up of Arbutus Ridge and Mackenzie Heights. Arbutus Ridge is centred upon Arbutus which runs parallel to an old railway line that helped to develop the area. Arbutus Shopping Centre and The Ridge Theatre are the primary landmarks in the neighbourhood.

You can go west across a small valley from Arbutus Ridge to Mackenzie Heights. Mackenzie Heights is made up almost entirely of single family homes. There is prime real estate here because houses on the side of the hill have a beautiful view of downtown and the North Shore mountains. Shops in the area can be found along Mackenzie and Macdonald Streets.

來到溫哥華的旅客常為其綠色的環境，與成排的行道樹留下深刻的印象，終年綠色的環境來自社區的草坪，以及高山與公園的常青樹。春天正是數以千計的櫻花 (Cherry)、李花(Plum)、木蘭花(Magnolia)、酸蘋果花(Crab Apple)、山茱萸(Dogwood)、杜鵑花 (Rhododendron)、山楂花(Hawthorn)、七葉樹花(Horse-Chestnut)、金鏈花(Laburnum)、丁香花(Lilac)盛開的季節。

溫哥華市目前有13萬棵行道樹，這還不包括私人庭院或野生公園的樹木，如今每一棵樹的背景資料都登載於溫哥華市公園局，隨時有園藝專家定期保養。當春暖花開時，你悠遊於市區，一眼望去，有如置身花海，真是美不勝收。

溫哥華春天的樹花中最為人們所喜愛的花，莫過於36,000棵櫻花與李花。櫻花樹皮光亮且有成行的呼吸孔。所有野生種皆為五個花瓣，白色或粉紅色，園藝種大多為重瓣。三月最早開花的樹種有紫葉李花(Purple-Leaved Plum)。

溫哥華的櫻花季跨越整個春天，比日本的櫻花季有過之而無不及，因為日本的櫻花雖然有名，但由於大多只局 限於公園且時間短暫。而溫哥華櫻花的種類多達三十多種，且遍植於整個地區，各種櫻花接二連三地開放，數千朵的櫻花開滿整棵樹，美如人間仙境。
