Terra Nova Natural Area

This site is comprised of regenerating field and artificial ponds which are contiguous with the much larger marshlands of the Sturgeon Banks Natural Area.  Recently, the field has been carpeted in flocks of snow geese, and harriers and short-eated owls are regularly observed hunting.  The shrub thickets along the ditch have provided wintering grounds for 6 long-eared owls, and a northern shrike has recently been reported in the vicinity of the ponds.

The ditch, which parallels the dyke trail  and which borders the marshes of Sturgeon Banks, provides excellent viewing of a variety of duck species, herptiles, and aquatic plants.  Management plans for the site include periodic mowing in the vicinity of the ponds, and some native species plantings.

The Terra Nova trailhead is located at the west end of River Road. An observation platform and picnic tables are located nearby. If you want to explore the open marsh, take the 3-mile (5-km) West Dyke Trail. The West Dyke Trail connects Terra Nova with Garry Point Park. A cycle trip can just as easily begin from one point or the other. Garry Point Park lies 3 miles (5 km) south of Terra Nova in the fishing community of Steveston.
