Rocky Shore
©¥¥Û®ü©¤¥ÍºA(Chinese)

The intertidal zone, particularly west of the headlands, provides a rich exhibit of seashells (mussels, finger limpets, barnacles), sea worms, anemones, hermit crabs, and several species of small fish, including tidepool sculpins. At low tide, the shoreline is crawling with life, in and out of the rocky pools. Purple shore crabs drag their bodies across the sand, leaving "tire" marks. Plants including the sea sac and sea palm are found at the water's edge.

The predominant plant species within the rocky intertidal habitat of the study area are seaweeds or
macro-algae (non-vascular plants), particularly green algae and red algae. Rockweed, a brown alga. Sessile organisms, primarily mussels and barnacles and Balanus glandula, were observed throughout the rocky zone.  Mobile organisms, mainly gammarid amphipods (beach hoppers), isopods (sow bugs), and shorecrabs were also seen. Rocky intertidal invertebrates are preyed upon by various birds at low tide and nearshore fishes at high tide.  For example, American crow and western gull were observed in the study area foraging amongst the cobbles and pebbles, feeding on mussels and crabs.  Black oystercatchers, ruddy turnstones, and black turnstones were also seen foraging in the rocky intertidal habitat at the site.
