We tried my best to identify the enthusiastic community leaders from our members and persuaded them to take the job almost without difficulty since May, 1999. The idea came from "Think globally, act locally".
As you may know, all of them are new immigrants and still learn adapt the new community. In the time being, not many leaders are interested in conservation issues and comfortably communicate in English. We
encourage them to participate in the conservation issues and partner with the local organizations in the near future. One third of the leaders did interpret the nature somewhat. Some groups got more than 10
participants every time. Some walked every other day in the parks.
The mission is to promote cross-cultural understanding of the unique eco-systems and cultures between Taiwan, Asia and Canada, and to
educate the public about the importance of conservation and bio-diversity by advancing a healthy way of living our daily life, providing guidance to appreciate the natural history, presenting opportunities to learn how to
decrease human disturbances and impacts, and encouraging active participation in community environmental protection, in order to accomplish the ideal goal of a sustainable ecosystem and human society.
Goals:
Community volunteer leaders and their walking groups commit themselves to walk rain or shine, regularly at least once a month in their adopted
community parks. They are encouraged to observe, appreciate, learn from, and care for the nature in long term.
Networking:
Related park information including trail map, natural history (geology, climate, plants, animals), aboriginal life, histories of early settlements, human
impacts, conservation issues, and rehabilitation efforts are provided to the leaders. Seasonal networking party and training workshop are held.
Promotion:
We announce their meeting time and places to the public through daily e-mail newsletter, press release, and websites.
