Aesthetics
文化欣賞(Chinese)

There is actually a relationship between the feeling of well-being that a work of art creates in us and the degree of
complexity of its shapes which can best be described in terms of an inverted "U". If we look at a series of works of
art of increasing complexity, our feeling of well-being gradually increases, but it declines again once a very high level of complexity has been reached.
However, it would be wrong to consider human perception as nothing more than a passive process in which only a certain quantity of the information on offer can be absorbed. If the incoming stimuli are organized, the quantity of
information can be reduced. We know from many everyday observations how pleasant it is to bring a sense of order into something that was originally a tangled mass. Good works of art should therefore display a good measure of
recognizable order.
The perception of artworks is not merely an affair of sensation. Memory, expectation, imagination, emotion and
reason (including narrative reasoning) play an ineliminable role as well. Consequently, since its advent, the field of
aesthetics has been concerned with the operation of fundamental psychological and cognitive processes, especially in relation to the arts.
